The company history of IWC

The three letters IWC stand for International Watch Company. The company was founded in 1868 by the American Florentine Aristo Jones in Schaffhausen. Jones deliberately chose this location because there was a great potential for trained specialists in the field of watchmaking around Schaffhausen. After a short time, the space at the first company headquarters became tight, so a new factory had to be built on the banks of the Rhine. This had space for 300 employees. In 1874, the company was converted into a stock corporation. Six years later, the company was taken over by Johannes Rauschenbach, a manufacturer of agricultural machinery. After his death, his son took over the management of the company. Around the turn of the century, there was a considerable increase in sales. In 1905 there was another change of ownership, and until 1955 IWC was managed by Ernst Homberger. In the 1970s the company came under pressure due to the high price of gold. In 1979 the company was sold to Adolf Schinderling AG. This change gave IWC a boost in innovation. The segment was expanded to include titanium watches, and the first compass watch was also launched. In 1991, IWC director Blümlein founded the LMH Group. In addition to the IWC company, the group holds 60 percent of the shares in the Jaeger-LeCoultre company.
