The story of its creation is as unusual as the timepiece itself. In the 1930s, two Portuguese merchants asked the designers of the International Watch Company, now known as IWC, for a special watch. It should be large and made of steel. It should also have the precision of a marine chronometer.
The first model in the IWC Portugieser series was launched in 1939. Technically and aesthetically, it surpassed other wristwatches of its time. It contrasted the Art Deco style with its delicate and rectangular wristwatches with a strikingly large, round case. The pocket watch caliber in the watch guaranteed precision and reliability through sophisticated mechanics.
Numerous model variants
The IWC Portugieser Grande Complication embodies the highest level of innovation. Models such as the Portugieser Tourbillon Mystère Rétrograde or the Portugieser Handaufzug and the Portugieser Yacht Club Chronograph were also successfully launched. In 2013, the Portugieser Chronograph Classic was presented to the public. A year later, the Portugieser Handaufzug Acht Tage followed. This watch is wound by its wearer every eight days. With the IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month Edition "75th Anniversary", the Schaffhausen-based company celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Portugieser series. The annual calendar on this watch is a first for IWC. It shows the month, date and day of the week in three semicircular windows.
