Omega & Snoopy: What is the Silver Snoopy Award?

The Silver Snoopy Award is one of NASA's highest honors. It is awarded to astronauts and employees who have made a significant contribution to the safety of space missions through outstanding achievements. In 1968, the then head of manned flight safety asked Snoopy creator Charles M. Schulz whether Snoopy could become NASA's official mascot. Schulz agreed, and so the iconic beagle became a symbol of safety and precision in space travel.

The connection to the Apollo 13 mission

Many people know the famous sentence: “Houston, we have a problem”, which was uttered during the Apollo 13- Missionwas pronounced in April 1970. What is less known, however, is the crucial role of the Omega Speedmaster in this dramatic rescue operation.

When an oxygen tank exploded on board Apollo 13, the astronauts faced a life-threatening situation. To return safely to Earth, they had to ignite their engines for exactly 14 seconds - without an onboard computer. This is where the Omega Speedmaster came into play, making it possible to carry out this critical time measurement precisely and thus ensure the survival of the crew. The astronauts returned safely to Earth on April 17, 1970.

On the dial of the Snoopy Limited Edition is the inspiring phrase "Failure is not an option" can be seen - known from the film Apollo 13. This sentence, spoken by Ed Harris in the role of Gene Kranz, embodies NASA's unwavering will to be successful even in extreme situations - a fitting motto for this special watch.

The caseback features a silver medal depicting Snoopy in his astronaut uniform - a tribute to the Silver Snoopy Award that Omega received from NASA in 1970. The medal is surrounded by a midnight blue enamel that has been refined with hand-applied silver powder.
