Rolex Day-Date 228238 - Green Lacquer: A homage to the legendary Stella series

Today we present a very special Rolex Day-Date: the reference 228238 - Green Lacquer.
This model is one of the rarest Day-Dates currently in production. Observant collectors will immediately notice the similarity to the legendary Stella series, which caused a stir in the 1970s and 1980s.
Here too, the manufacturing process is extremely complex: six thin layers of enamel and a precise polish enhance the bright green color of the dial. Given Rolex's history and limited production of such specialty dials, it is unlikely that this model will be in production for long. Since there are only a few examples in the world, this could be a rare opportunity.
While we enjoy the presence of this exceptional example in our webshop, we take this moment to tell the story of the iconic Stella series.
Let's delve into the fascinating history of these bold and colorful Rolex dials that continue to delight collectors and enthusiasts to this day!

The Rolex Stella series: A colorful classic with rarity value

When you talk about iconic watches, the name Rolex naturally comes up immediately. But even within the brand's dazzling portfolio, there are some models that have a particular fascination for collectors and enthusiasts. One such highlight is undoubtedly the Rolex Stella series, whose colorful dials and rarity make them a real jewel in the watch world. In this blog post we take a look at the history of Stella watches, what colors they were decorated with and why they are so incredibly sought after today.

1. The origin of the Rolex Stella series: An unusual step

The Rolex Stella dials are part of the Rolex Day-Date collection, also known as the “President” watch. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Rolex decided to take a bold step and offer colorful, lacquered dials - a stark contrast to the more conservative designs the brand was known for. These dials became known as “Stella Dials”: some suggest that the name was inspired by an Italian artist, others think it may be an homage to the Latin word “Stella” (star) – appropriate for dials that are distinguished by their brilliance shine.
In reality, the origin of the name is much more prosaic: the name 'Stella' actually comes from a Swiss company called Stella SA. However, in this case, you can truly say that the stars have aligned to produce an iconic name.
The introduction of these dials was a bold attempt by Rolex to appeal to a younger and more modern audience. But ironically, buyers of the time didn't really seem ready for these extravagant colors. Many still preferred the more classic versions of the Day-Date models, which meant that the Stella models were only produced in small numbers at the time.

2. The color selection: a rainbow for the wrist

Another reason why Stella watches are so popular today is their variety of bright colors. These dials were available in a range of bold tones that were unparalleled in the watch world at the time. Colors offered throughout the Stella series included:

• Deep red (“Oxblood”)
• Sunny yellow
• Emerald green
• Turquoise blue ("Tiffany Blue")
• Orange
• Delicate pink (“Candy Pink”)
• Lila
• Black and white
The dials consisted of several layers of lacquer, which gave them a special depth and liveliness. This made them not only visually appealing but also extremely durable.

3. Production period: Short but memorable years

The Rolex Stella dials were introduced in the late 1970s and were produced until around the early 1980s. This short production span - estimated from 1977 to 1985 - contributes significantly to the rarity of these models. While Rolex made many Day-Date watches during this time, the Stella version was only available in very limited numbers. Many of the dials were even subsequently replaced with more traditional versions, making the remaining models with the original Stella dials even rarer.

4. Rare and sought after: a collector's item with cult status

Although the Stella watches did not have the commercial success hoped for back then, today the tide has completely turned. Collectors worldwide appreciate the uniqueness and rarity of these colorful timepieces. The original Stella dials have become true rarities that achieve top prices at auctions and collectors' fairs.
Their unconventional design and limited availability make them real jewels for Rolex lovers today. It is not uncommon for Stella models to change hands for high five to six-figure sums. These watches represent an era in which Rolex experimented and broke new ground - a bold step that later turned out to be legendary.
