The surprising Rolex GMT-Master II Sprite: A watch for left-handers

Rolex is known for being very slow in developing its products. Whether it's introducing a new caliber, a new feature or just a new color, Rolex takes its time and introduces changes carefully.

But in 2022, Rolex surprised the critics and brought something completely new onto the market: the GMT-Master II reference 126720TVNR, also known as "Sprite".
This model is fundamentally different from previous GMTs because it is designed for left-handers. With a green and black bezel and the crown and date window on the left side - i.e. at the 9 o'clock position - this watch is aimed at left-handers who wear the watch on their right wrist.

Rolex Sprite: A watch that polarizes

The “Sprite” caused a lot of excitement. While many left-handers rejoiced, opinions in the general watch community were divided. Some fans found the design confusing or even unaesthetic.
But as is often the case with Rolex watches, enthusiasm grew over time. Almost two years after its release, the Sprite is becoming increasingly popular and is being treated as a potential collector's item.

Technical details of the Rolex Sprite: Familiar, but different

Apart from the inverted configuration, the Sprite is technically identical to other GMT-Master II models. The case, the glass, the caliber 3285 and the bracelet have remained the same. Only the crown and the date window have been moved to the left side. This makes the operation a bit unusual as it is literally upside down, but for left-handers this is a welcome innovation.

Historical Rolex curiosity: The left-handed Rolex GMT-Master 6542 “Pussy Galore”

A historical curiosity: In 2018, a unique, left-handed GMT model from Rolex, the reference 6542, appeared at auction. This watch, nicknamed "Pussy Galore" - named after the famous female character from the James Bond film Goldfinger - was auctioned for around 250,000 euros.

This particular model is so exceptional because it is one of the very few left-handed Rolex models, making it a true rarity among collectors.

Will the Rolex Sprite be the next big collector's item?

It is entirely possible that the Rolex Sprite will also become a sought-after collector's item in the future - and not just for left-handers.
