  • Blancpain watchmakers invented countless complications and have proven over the decades that they remain true to their own tradition of innovation under all circumstances. Blancpain watches continually push the boundaries of watchmaking.

This is what sets Blancpain watches apart

Since the early years of its company history, the name Blancpain has stood for excellent watchmaking. The Swiss company continues to delight watch lovers around the world with its classic models, diving watches and sporty chronographs. At the same time, the Blancpain manufacturer continually demonstrates its reputation as a hotbed of innovation. Blancpain was one of the first watch brands to create a tourbillon in a wristwatch. The tourbillon was originally invented and patented by the legendary watchmaker Abraham-Louis Breguet. In a pocket watch, errors were once supposed to be eliminated by the action of gravity. Today, the tourbillon is an attractive detail that watch lovers can view through an opening in the dial. Another special feature of Blancpain are ultra-thin watches. The Villeret Ultraplate two-hand watch is typical. It is just over 7 millimeters thin. A 2.8 millimeter high manufacture caliber works in its case. The most classic collection of Blancpain watches takes its name from the company's birthplace, the village of Villeret. The watches from this series impress with clear dials, pure lines and an elegant case with a typical double bezel. The Blancpain Villeret Quantième Phases de Lune is equipped with a moon phase display. This complication had almost disappeared before it was revisited by Blancpain in the early 1980s.

    Popular models of Blancpain watches

One of Blancpain's most famous watch models is the Fifty Fathoms diving watch. The sports watch was introduced in 1953. At that time, the French Navy commissioned a watch for underwater operations. The Fifty Fathoms was the first wristwatch for diving to have a rotating bezel that was secured with a mechanism to prevent accidental adjustment. The Fifty Fathoms owes its name to the British measurement of 50 fathoms, about 90 meters. The watch was waterproof up to this depth thanks to double O-ring seals and a screwed back. Today, sport and hobby divers may find water resistance of less than 100 meters to be low. At the beginning of the 1950s this was enormous progress. The watch workshop launched around twenty additional models from the Fifty Fathoms series in the following years. A highlight of the Fifty Fathoms family is the classic Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Automatique. Lovers of sporty luxury watches for diving will be impressed by this model with a 45-millimeter case and a wide bezel made of scratch-resistant ceramic.

  • Since then it has been one of Blancpain's special symbols. An important complication on the Blancpain Villeret Chronograph is the flyback function. A chronograph equipped with this combines the functions of stopping, zeroing and starting in just one operation. The hands of the watch fly back again with a single press on the crown. A chronograph without a flyback function, on the other hand, has to be pressed three times to interrupt the stopping process, reset the hands again and start counting again.

Blancpain - one of the oldest watch manufacturers in the world

Blancpain's history goes back over two centuries to 1735. The young watchmaker Jehan-Jacques Blancpain was living and working in Villeret in western Switzerland at the time. There he initially only manufactured individual components for watches in his house. In 1815, he transformed Blancpain into a division-of-labor watch factory. But Blancpain only began to write the big story in the 20th century. In the years from 1950, Blancpain watchmakers set about designing tiny hand-wound movements. Finally, in 1982, Jean-Claude Biver and Jacques Piguet acquired the rights to the Blancpain brand. A year later, Blancpain fueled the rebirth of the mechanical watch with the introduction of a moon phase wristwatch. Just two years later, an extra-thin watch with a minute repeater followed. Finally, in 1987, the Swiss watch house Blancpain launched what was then the smallest automatic chronograph with a date display in the world. A tourbillon with an eight-day power reserve came in 1991. In the same year, Blancpain thrilled the world with the "1735". The most complicated wristwatch in the world at the time consisted of 740 components. The watch brand has been part of the Swatch Group since 1992. Blancpain has had the status of a manufacturer, which is important for its prestige, since 2010.
