  • On December 7, 1845, Ferdinand Adolph Lange founded the watch manufacturer "A. Lange, Dresden" in Glashütte with his future brother-in-law, the watchmaker Friedrich August Adolf Schneider (1824 - 1878). From 1868, after his son Richard joined as co-owner, the company was renamed A. Lange & Söhne. In 1871, his son Friedrich Emil Lange also joined the company management. Under this leadership, the company rose to fame. In 1948, the company A. Lange & Söhne was expropriated by the Soviet occupying forces. Until then, the manufactory was managed by Otto, Rudolf and Gerhard (sons of Emil Lange). Over 100 years saw the creation of more than 30 watch patents.

    New foundation

On December 7, 1990, Walter Lange founded Lange Uhren GmbH as a new watch manufacturer and acquired the trademark rights for "A. Lange & Söhne," which had since been transferred to the Treuhandanstalt. Lange Uhren GmbH is the continuation of the traditional watch brand, even if no direct legal company tradition exists.

The comeback of this brand is thanks to the then President of the IWC (International Watch Company), Günter Blümlein. With the personal and financial support of LMH Holding (Les Manufactures Horlogères), the new company was able to establish itself on the market. Together they presented the first four TOURBILLON “Pour le Mérite” models on October 24, 1994, as well as the TOURBILLON “Pour le Mérite” with its patented large date, which is typical of the brand. LANGE 1, SAXONIA and ARCADE.

Other models such as the Cabaret, the Datograph, the Double Split Chronograph, the Langematik Perpetual, the Richard Lange, the Turbograph Pour le Mérite, the Zeitwerk and the Saxonia with the automatic movement “Sax-0-Mat” followed.
Since 2001, the company has been part of the Richemont Group (Compagnie Financière Richemont SA is a Swiss luxury goods group) with headquarters in Bellevue in the canton of Geneva and since 2004 under the management of Fabian Krone.
In 2007, the watch brand “A. Lange & Söhne” came first in the two-year ranking of the 30 most important German luxury brands compiled by the magazine Wirtschaftswoche! Even ahead of the Maybach automobile manufacturer.
