Timelessly beautiful and technically perfect watches from IWC

Florentine Ariosto Jones worked as a watchmaker in Boston in 1856. At the age of 27, he became deputy director and production manager of the E. Howard Watch & Clock Company. Due to lower labor costs and more qualified personnel, he decided to produce high-quality watches in Switzerland for the American market, which was particularly attractive from his point of view. In 1868, the engineer and watchmaker Jones (1841 - 1916) founded his watch factory - the IWC Schaffhausen (International Watch Co.)

The success story of IWC Schaffhausen

IWC was converted into a joint-stock company in 1874. The founding of the company, the purchase of machines and the construction of a new building a year later caused too high costs, so Jones resigned as managing director and returned to the USA. His successor Fred Seeland was also unable to get IWC out of the red. The high import duties in the USA and the economic crisis in Europe had a negative impact on business. Seeland left IWC in 1879. In the same year, the industrialist Johannes Rauschenbach-Vogel (1815 - 1881) from Schaffhausen bought IWC after two American managing directors had managed the company. In the following decades, under his leadership and later under his son Johannes Rauschenbach-Schenk (1856 - 1905), the economic breakthrough was achieved. In the 1970s and 1980s, many market shares were lost due to the quartz watch boom. When the company again specialised in classic mechanical complications under Günter Blümlein (1943 – 2001), economic success followed.
